Hunger is particularly dangerous for children. The United Nations World Food Programme estimates that:
- Poor nutrition causes 45% of deaths in children under 5 years old
- 1 in 6 children in the developing world is underweight
- 1 in 4 children in the world are suffering from irreversible consequences from food shortages
- 66 million children elementary school children go to school hungry every day
